What is #meltingICE? How do we #meltICE? Where do #wemeltICE?

Melting ICE is a creative way to participate in the movement to #AbolishICE.

Melting ICE started in New York around the Varick Detention Center where the New Sanctuary Coalition leads weekly vigils. Many people in our community were tired of living in fear of I.C.E. We wanted to express our feelings publicly. We placed cubes of ice around the walls of the Detention Center. As the ice began to weep, we called the names of our friends who are detained and we committed to stand with them. As blocks of ice passed from hand to hand, our individual fears became a collective responsibility. And as the ice melted, we felt the power of a united community to create change.

Today, opposition to I.C.E. has grown into a powerful national movement. We must keep up the momentum and demand the abolition of I.C.E.

We invite communities across the U.S. to demonstrate their opposition to I.C.E. by participating in a national day of Melting I.C.E.

On this website, you will find ideas for how to use the symbolism of ice to create a MeltingICE event in your community. You can also post images, stories, or responses about your event. Although all the events will be different, together they will send a powerful message.

Forcefully or lovingly. Decisively or patiently. With sunshine, gravity, or human warmth. We will need all elements to melt I.C.E.
